A fairly presentable but sometimes tedious Hammer romp through Cromwell's England, with Hedley and Thorburn battling for the Royalist cause against Colonel Judd (Jeffries), while Reed hovers in between as a love-smitten, treacherous turncoat. Judd is prepared to use the torture chamber when it suits him, but - apart from the period - there is no analogy with Witchfinder General, since this film carried a 'U' certificate and lacks any real period atmosphere. Gilling went on to do much better things for Hammer like The Reptile and Plague of the Zombies.Author: DP
