Scary Movie 2 (2001)
Director: Keenen Ivory Wayans
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
When, after the unexpected success of the first Scary Movie, Miramax immediately demanded a sequel, director Wayans and his younger brothers and co-writers Shawn and Marlon were given less than half the time it took to write the first. The result is a hack job that picks over the still warm carcass of its predecessor, regurgitating jokes which barely warranted their first screen outing. If this movie were a foodstuff, it would be processed cheese spread. The likes of House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting and Poltergeist are given the Wayans treatment, and it says a lot that any one of the original movies spoofed here contains more genuine laughs than this lacklustre effort. It shows no understanding of or insight into the genre it's attempting to parody, nor indeed of cinema in general. Many of the original cast who died at the end of the first film are mysteriously reanimated for the second. We can only hope that this time they stay dead.Author: WI
