The Secret (1979)
Director: Ann Hui
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Aside from fleeting glimpses of a hospital and a disco, Hui's first feature shows nothing of modern Hong Kong - which is fitting, since the theme is the hold of the past over the present and the focus is on the power of superstition in the characters' lives. Based on a then recent real-life murder mystery, the film takes an inconclusive autopsy, a supposedly dangerous madman and a suspected haunting in its stride as it moves to a truly hysterical climax. Gory, suspenseful, impressive.Author: TR
