From Time Out Film Guide

Judge Fayard (Dewaere) is a bright-eyed amalgam of Errol Flynn and Uomo Vogue, whose cowboy nickname is the result of his tendency to come on like The Sweeney. A petty crime leads him to uncover a major one, its multi-million franc haul partly ending up as a Gaullist candidate's campaign bankroll. Unfortunately the film skates to a familiar denouement, content to offer the occasional crumb of irony amid an odd blend of plodding realism and tough guy staples.
