So Fine (1981)
Director: Andrew Bergman
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
On the long list of comedy ideas screenwriters should never have had, this film must rank high. O'Neal reprises his performance from What's Up, Doc?, here cast as a klutz of a college professor co-opted to revive his father's ailing rag-trade business when he accidentally hits upon a craze in denims. The gimmick is jeans with see-through derriƩre, and most of the humour on display in this would-be screwball comedy has an inanity which follows suit with this central conceit. Directing his own script, Bergman executes his knowing movie references - O'Neal as Cary Grant, embarrassed in improvised drag; a nod toward the lustful satire of Tashlin's The Girl Can't Help It; a Marx Brothers-inspired night at the opera finale - with a kind of vulgar energy that does little to decorate his otherwise threadbare sitcom material.Author: RM
