Stranger Inside (2000)
Director: Cheryl Dunye
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Impressive HBO drama set in a women's prison. Treasure makes sure she's transferred from juve, intent on meeting the mother she has never known, a lifer who goes by the name of 'Brownie'. It turns out Brownie is a hardcase who controls the flow of contraband among the black prisoners - a 'mother' to all her 'daughters', as long as they don't fuck with her. It's a compelling set-up, with cracking performances from Ross and McFadden, and a refreshingly hardboiled, unexploitative view of prison life, which is only slightly undercut by a latent Group Therapy sensibility.Author: TCh
