Summer and Smoke (1961)
Director: Peter Glenville
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Faltering, prissy adaptation of Tennessee Williams play set in 1916. Geraldine Page (Oscar-nominated) an ageing small-town Mississippi spinster gets the hots for medical student Harvey, who in turn is more interested in Hispanic firebrand Moreno. Much overwrought dialogue, but the whole thing's treated like bone china by British theatre type Glenville, and even Page is curiously studied. One for students of the thick-stirred Southern accent.Author: TJ
