From Time Out Film Guide

Three art dealers employ a tormented forger (Patric) to paint a 'lost' Rembrandt. Director Badham opts to play it straight, as if this will somehow render the whole exercise less preposterous. Choice moments include Patric daubing furiously in an Amsterdam garret, his sweaty torso decoratively splashed with paint, and the jaw-dropping revelation that a gauche Parisian art student (Jacob) is in fact the world authority on the Dutch master. A plot to frame the forger for murdering one of the dealers culminates with a ludicrous scene at the Old Bailey in which Donovan attempts to prove his innocence by reproducing 'live' his fake masterpiece.
