From Time Out Film Guide

Courtroom drama meets pious liberalism in this stolid adaptation of the Jerome Lawrence-Robert E Lee play about the Tennessee 'Monkey Trial' of 1925 (when a young schoolmaster - played by York - was indicted for illegally teaching Darwinian theory). Tolerably gripping in its old-fashioned way, thanks chiefly to old pro performances from Tracy and March as the rival lawyers and ideologists, but rather let down by Kelly's inadequacy as the cynical journalist who is comfortably denounced as the real villain of the piece.
