'Cop Tips Waitress $2 Million': that was the headline in the New York press when Charlie Lang showed up at a coffee shop on his beat and presented Yvonne Biasi with the winnings he'd promised to split with her if his number came up in the lottery. This fairy tale is narrated by a tabloid journalist 'Angel' (Hayes) and comes complete with a wicked witch, Charlie's wife Muriel, who wants all the money for herself. Perez has a field day as Muriel, injecting a welcome note of good old-fashioned greed into what is otherwise a relentlessly edifying story. As Charlie, Cage is on best behaviour, while the wan Fonda is white-bread-with-crusts-off as the waitress worth her heart of gold.
