It was thanks to his brash handling of the chases in this thriller, loosely based on the Great Train Robbery, that Peter Yates was asked to go to America to make Bullitt. That said, there's more than a whiff of The League of Gentlemen (1959) about the script, but Yates makes efficient use of his locations, and the chase sequences are genuinely exciting.
