Yanks (1979)
Director: John Schlesinger
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
From the arrival of a platoon of GIs in Northern England to their departure for D-Day, this chronicles three wartime romances, supposedly illuminating the fears and tensions that riddled the Anglo-American alliance. Good cast, scrupulous period reconstruction, and sentimentality; but it doesn't do much to redeem Schlesinger from the 'less-than-meets-the-eye' category.Author:

- Posted on Feb 22 2008 06:52 Less than meets the eye? Schlesinger?? The same Schlesinger who directed Midnight Cowboy? The Day of the Locust? Marathon Man? What does it take to "meet your eye"?...Perhaps it's the scripts that aren't what they used to be?? Compared to what I'm watching today, Yanks holds up as a good little romance, Gere is at his youthful best and other than say WITNESS, I'd say that this is about as good as a romance got in the 80s (1979). This is the second time I've seen it; it was a good although not great movie then and it's still a good movie today.

Being on invasion alert, surely they would have been in Kent, Dorset or Hampshire etc. Can anyone correct me or am I justified in my shock at such inaccuracy? (John Schlesinger should know better!) comment you type in this box will appear on the site
