A Zed & Two Noughts (1985)
Director: Peter Greenaway
Movie review
From Time Out New York
Death hides in plain sight in 1985’s A Zed & Two Noughts, in which director Peter Greenaway’s disgust and distrust of the flesh elbows its way to center stage. Separated Siamese twins (Brian and Eric Deacon) film animals rotting away to nothingness; meanwhile, an amputee (Ferréol) takes them on as lovers. Cunning examples of doubling spiral into the dozens, as the brothers’ obsessions with decomposition and reunification eventually start to merge. Dense and difficult, Zed requires at least two viewings to scratch its surface; as with the rest of the director’s work, the rewards are worth the effort.Author: David Fear
