Shot widescreen in Namibia, writer/director Elaine (Friends) Proctor's well directed and good looking romance blends themes of incest and a love of nature with racial, ethnic, sexual and historical concerns to diverting, often charged, but finally conventional effect. Otto's Anna is an interesting mix of naivety and passion as the game reserve worker passionate about her elephants. Her relationship with black American lawyer Stone (Washington) brings the wrath of Marius, her pastor brother. Her internal conflicts about racial matters are mirrored by Stone's sense of identity, torn as he is between an idealistic commitment to defend a local Himba tribesman - and thereby stay with Anna - and his desire to return to America and potential riches.Author: WH
