The old story of how Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday took on the Clanton mob and brought law and order to the town of Tombstone. This version fields an impressive supporting cast (in addition to the above, Michael Rooker, Stephen Lang, Charlton Heston, Harry Carey Jr, Billy Zane and Jason Priestley), a screenplay by Kevin Jarre which is at least on speaking terms with history, and decidedly no-frills direction by George (Rambo) Cosmatos. Kilmer makes a surprisingly effective and effete Holliday, but Russell lacks the stature for Earp - Sam Elliott as his older brother Virgil suggests a better movie. There's a misguided romantic subplot and the ending rather sprawls, but mostly this is rootin', tootin' entertainment with lots of authentic facial hair.

    Posted on Sep 14 2008 20:19 On the contrary, Kurt Russell is about the only actor who COULD convey the intense mental stature and reserve of a guy like Earp. Every "real" cowboy I know loves this movie and practically knows it word for word -- in part because of the sheer force that Russell brings to Earp. I love Kilmer (Michael Biehn, Powers Boothe, and even a plump Billy Bob Thornton) give great performances, too), but the more you watch this eminently rewatchable movie, the more you see Russell is the "oak, all right!"

    Posted on Jul 03 2008 16:11 Tombstone is without a doubt the"Best" western ever made. No one else has portrayed "Doc Holiday" as brilliantly as Val Kilmer! "Ever" Every character gave great performances. This movie did not get the credit it so richley deserved!
