S Africa, just before the end of apartheid. Sello 'Chicco' Twala is a black pop star/promoter, a millionaire who can't vote. His planned Tracy Chapman concert is falling through and he's quarrelling with his white partner over differences in black and white singers' fees. He shuttles between several sets of wives and children, while arranging for the funeral of his brother, shot by 'gangsters'. (Chicco himself always goes armed.) Plus, he's got Nick Broomfield, festooned with recording devices, on his case. The result feels like only half a film, all loose ends and enigmas, with Chicco coming over as a mix of the sinister and the sympathetic: a snapshot of a complicated man living a strange life in troubled times.Author: BBa
