From Time Out Film Guide

Submarine commander Glenn Ford pursues the ship that led the attack on Pearl Harbor back to Tokyo, where he plans to sink the bastard. But there's a freighter in the way, and gee whiz, on board are his wife and children, who are prisoners of the Japs and whom we have grown to love in flashbacks. To hell with it, he thinks, his country comes first, and he blows the freighter out of the water. That's heroism for you.
