True Love (1989)
Director: Nancy Savoca
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A bad-tempered, foul-mouthed, hilarious Bronx love story, this tells of Michael (Eldard) and Donna (Sciorra), young Italian-Americans about to get hitched. Savoca guides them twixt the Scylla and Charybdis of their respective families' expectations, only to have them founder on the rocks of their own selfishness. Michael and Donna have hard lessons to learn, and major humble pie to eat before they can even make it to the altar; and their strident battles are fought out against a backdrop of colourful, crude characters. Wise moms, sassy girlfriends and boozing mates, all chip in with advice on the debate: what do men and women seek from marriage, and can they ever be compatible? It's told in a belligerent, noisy, da-fucksa-matter-wit-you urban growl; a sour belch in the face of marriage, and very funny, too.Author: SFe
