Twister (1990)
Director: Michael Almereyda
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
An engagingly slapdash tale of an everyday American family: soda pop billionaire Dad (Stanton), fin de siècle fop son (Glover), teenage single-parent daughter (Amis), and her moppet progeny who drags around her pet plastic lizard in a jar. When Amis' lovelorn suitor and Dad's evangelist fiancée come a-calling, all hell doesn't quite break out, but there's some entertainingly freaky dialogue - and even freakier acting - to liven things up along the way. With verbal, visual and narrative non-sequiturs at every turn - the freak weather conditions of the title, a mysterious helicopter, and a wildly incongruous William Burroughs cameo - Twister is clearly lost without a map from the first frame. Languorous pace and uneasy self-consciousness notwithstanding, it's in a similar bracket to the work of Hal Hartley and Atom Egoyan; it has a spaced-out charm of its own. And Glover's ludicrous wardrobe and whip-dancing skills make this a must for completists of Crazy Crispin.Author: JRo
