Turgid epic set in the 23rd year of the Thirty Years War (that's 1641, to save you looking it up) in which Cockney Caine leads his troops into a fertile valley which, just for once, they decide not to pillage. Reason? Caine has met refugee philosopher Omar Sharif and they've reached a mutual understanding. Clear-as-mud plotting and Tower of Babel accents don't help the allegory to make its point. A solid snore.

    Posted on Aug 18 2007 04:06 Beautifully shot film in a beautiful part of the Alps. Brian Blessed being stabbed with Capt Caine's spiked helmet is memorable. Excellent John Barry soundtrack - I played the LP for many years.
