Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

This excellent follow-up from the director of A Toute Vitesse is a subtle, sensitive, frank and finely acted drama which throws much light on the modern Maghrebi experience as it affects the younger generation. French-Algerian Samy (the expressive Cazalé) is bundled off to his family's Algerian village after his slightly mysterious involvement in a hit and run accident. There he comes under the caring interest of his elderly grandfather, a scarred veteran of the War of Independence, and his smart, attractive doctor cousin. As his isolation from both French and Algerian cultures becomes evident, he is increasingly torn between them. Writer/director Morel treads a careful line between exposing the arbitrary nature, problems, and positive sides of these two different cultures.
