Director David Gordon Green's toe dip into the Southern-gothic thriller genre reaches back beyond the valley of the Badlands to channel other elements, but the young artist's particular brand of Malick-style Americana still dominates, and at the expense of any dramatic momentum. Green's signature pastoral tangents and codeine pacing don't slow down this tale of two boys fleeing their psychotic uncle so much as inappropriately slacken any of the story's suspenseful aspects. The auteur's raw talent floats the film's filial first half, but this attempt to broaden the director's horizons still feels like a misstep.Author: DF
