Belle, only 18 years old, is so arrestingly good in Rebecca Miller's third feature, she makes you think, Daniel Day-Who? Her Rose, a preternaturally serene love child reared on a 70s commune, easily could have wafted away in her diaphanous robes and long, unstyled locks. But Belle grounds the character in well-modulated heartache, increasingly aware that her private Eden, shared with her ailing dad, Jack (Day-Lewis), is about to end. Miller elicits a great, messy charm from the titular duo's frank exchanges, wandering from the awkwardly parental to the perversely conspiratorial. Their ballad is a sad one, but it frequently lilts.Author: JR
