From Time Out New York

Fiennes has always been good, but in author John le Carré's 2000 postimperial African thriller, he may have found his signature role, a quiet English diplomat in Kenya brought low by the death of his activist wife (Weisz) and never fully revitalized by his quest to discover the circumstances behind it. Fernando Meirelles (City of God) brings sizzle and movement to le Carré's cool prose, an unlikely marriage that's not as distracting as you might imagine. What you'll remember most, though, are Fiennes's haunted eyes and a beautiful slate of supporting turns, each one a fun little lesson in slyness.
