Contemplative DJay (a magnetic Howard) tools around Memphis's back alleys in a beat-up car, pimping out his chief prostitute while a midlife crisis snipes at his heels: "Is this it for me?" he wonders aloud. Enter those tried-and-true objects of inspiration—the secondhand Casio keyboard and the childhood buddy who now works as a gospel recording technician (Anderson)—and DJay is finally emboldened to make the leap from hustle to flow in a very satisfying narrative. Writer-director Craig Brewer may make too much of the fate of DJay's demo; the beautiful thing is it exists.Author: JR
