‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano’s predictably unpredictable follow-up to the runaway success of ‘Zatoichi’ is a peculiarly inward affair, a dream-logic puzzle-box full of references to his earlier work (especially ‘Sonatine’). The filmmaker plays the two leads, both versions of himself: a self-important star director and his doppelgänger, a humble convenience-store worker and wannabe extra, whose fantasies – or is that the director’s imagined idea of his fantasies? – form the meat of the action. Colour, rhythm and sound count for more than narrative; rather than plot it’s a case of keeping track of whose head we’re in now.Author: BW
