Movie review

From Time Out New York

Peggy Lee got Jackie Paris an audition at Capitol; Lenny Bruce called him a “hip Pat Boone”; Sarah Vaughan touted him as a “kissy singer.” Director Raymond De Felitta hears an album by the ’50s cult legend and goes in search of lost rhyme, thinking the performer is long dead until he sees a 2004 listing in The New Yorker for one of Paris’s shows. Frail and wide-eyed, the crooner has a selective memory—something of a liability in a portrait of an artist. And though the archival footage De Felitta assembles has an occasional kick, it’s nothing compared with Bruce Weber’s homage to Frances Faye—another singer’s singer—in 2001’s Chop Suey.
