Synopsis

In this portrait of the workers at a closing Chinese munitions factory, Jia pushes genre boundaries. He intermixes shots of the factory and the surrounding city with monologues by workers—conventional documentary stuff. And then you realize that some but not all of those interviewed are actually actors. It’s not clear how this deliberate blurring of lines relates to the subject matter, but it’s certainly provocative.Author: Hank Sartin
