The Universe of Keith Haring (2007)
Movie review
From Short Review - NY
**** (Four stars)
Christina Clausen’s earnest hagiography traces the eponymous street artist’s creative trajectory with the kind of broad strokes used in Haring’s simple silhouettes. It follows the painter's career from his childhood paper route in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, to his rapid ascendance in the 1980s East Village art scene, and ends with his untimely death from AIDS at age 31. Though the doc might have benefitted from more critical commentary on Haring’s stylized Pop work, interviews with a heady roster of personalities—Fab 5 Freddy, Kenny Scharf, Yoko Ono and David LaChapelle among them—makes for an engaging portrait of the period.—Erin Clements, Around Town writer
