Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (2008)
Director: Nathan Frankowski
Movie review
From Time Out New York
No intelligence allowed, indeed, as Ben Stein misguidedly crusades against what he perceives as the science community’s slavish devotion to natural selection. Stein uses the Berlin Wall as an awkward metaphor for intelligent-design proponents trying to get their ideas heard. He even tours Dachau to illustrate Darwinism run amok in the form of Hitler’s death camps. You keep waiting for Stein to smile and say, “Gotcha!” in his signature monotone; instead, you watch him debate noted atheist bad guy Richard Dawkins, using an adolescent version of the First Cause argument disposed of by Kant centuries ago. Next thing you know, the Flat Earth Society will be making a major comeback.Author: Drew Toal

- Posted on May 02 2008 16:22 I Strongly recommend this movie. It was totally ripped by almost every movie reviewer. I ALMOST didn't go see it because the "reviewers" gave it a 0 or F rating. See if you are not at the very least entertained and challenged to think. Its definately NOT boring. Its funny and thought provoking. Usually I can understand why movie critics give out certain ratings etc., however, in this case, in this case the prejudice must run so deep that they were not able to watch it without going crazy about the message. See it and judge for yourself. If you are like me, you'll walk out of this movie asking questions. It doesn't try to make you believe anything. It simply makes you ask a few questions? Does the belief in evolution ultimately lead to a disbelief in God? does Darwinism lead to an immoral society. Did Darwin have any clue as to how complicated a single cell is when he came up with his THEORY of evolution? If he had known what we know today about how complicated a single cell IS, would he have reached a different conclusion??? Just thinkin...

Einstein was an atheist, bro
"It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it.

"Einstein could have been in this movie defending ID and the oh so intellectual Mom's basement boys would be out berating everything about it."
Actually Einstien was an atheist and a humanist. So I doubt he would be in this piece of crap! - Report as inappropriate

Think of that when you think of who is arrogant in this debate.

- Posted on Apr 21 2008 20:44 Ben Stein seems to confuse freedom of expression with the scientific method. So does most of the reviews I've read so far. Debunking evolution by natural selection (there is no such thing as "Darwinism") is simply not enough -- for ID to have ANY scientific merit, it has to follow the rules and standards set forth by the scientific method. ID and creationism deals with non-testable and non-observable metaphysics, and have, as a matter of fact, no place in science class whatsoever. Until someone actually can prove to us that such a designer or creator exists (namely God), this sort of pseudoscience is nothing more than religion and philosophy.

Mike Bellsmith, you are wrong - Stein IS arguing against the scientific merits of the theories of evolution and natural selection (and is making a piss-poor job of it).
It's sad that the US has come to this. No other country cares about "Intelligent Design" - this issue exists nowhere else, because they know that believing in God does not contradict science. Only in the US have the fundamentalists managed to convince too many people that science will weaken their faith. There IS no contradiction between believing that God created everything, including the process of evolution, and believing that scientific methods should be used to show how evolution works. None. - Report as inappropriate

- Posted on Apr 20 2008 20:00 Many of the reviews so far have missed the point of Mr. Stein's film. The argument he is putting forth is not that either Darwinism or Intelligent Design are necessarily true but that the evidence for both exists and should be open for discussion. That is the same argument the ACLU, through Darrow, used at the Scopes Trial to ask that evolution be taught in the Dayton, Tennessee schools. From I saw presented in the film, I believe Mr. Stein has made his point, especially after seeing the final interview in the film with Richard Dawkins. If anyone thinks the film is a bit heavy handed and sensationalized, I suggest you read some of Dr. Dawkins' books. Expelled pales in comparison. For example, Dawkins now, rather than calling himself an evolutionist, calls himself a bright because he believes anyone who does not believe in Darwinian evolution is either stupid, ignorant, or insane. Dawkins, therefore, sees himself as bright. Think of that when you think of who is arrogant in this debate.

- Posted on Apr 20 2008 17:39 It is clear that those who love Michael Moore' search for the truth and Al Gore's illusions will hate this movie. It is also clear that in any case both sides may make their claims without ever seeing the movie based on their own Worldview. I saw it...am not a creationist and still gave it a plausible 4 / 5. It is not the most entertaining movie I have ever seen, but was educational and revealing.

- Posted on Apr 20 2008 03:33 Stein knew he would get negative comments about this film like this review (in fact, he predicts it at the end of the piece), and he knows he will not get any awards like that master of truth Michael Moore or that power-point illusionist Al Gore; instead, Stein was just making a point that real academic freedom is in jeopardy. That there is only one hand clapping is palpably true. His goal is not to disprove Darwinism per se, but to question why so many credible minds are being unnaturally deselected from the discourse.

- Posted on Apr 20 2008 03:11 Regardless of whether this film is one-sided or not, Stein demonstrates that there are credible people out there, clearly not fanatics, from biologists to journalists to astronomers to physicists to philosophers, to physicians (even leftists) who clearly and coherently call into question the one sided approach being propagated on this issue. It is true that what it comes down to is world view. If the writers on this review (including the reviewer) were to check and report their own, I’m sure a clear pattern would emerge. Also, make no mistake about it, Nazism and Sanger had roots in Darwinian ideas.

Clear and lucid arguments on both sides of the debate.
What do we lose if there is only "the sound of one hand clapping?"
Here's what troubles me and was not brought up: We are already living in a time when we can select which child will live and which will never be born. Parents giving birth to an "imperfect" child today are considered irresponsible by many because they did not act on their ability to put the child away quietly.
We are godlike in our power to decide who lives and who dies.
Are we godlike in our ability to know right from wrong? - Report as inappropriate

The Nazi's rejected Darwinism, In 1935, Die Bücherei, the official Nazi journal for lending libraries, published a list of guidelines of works to reject, including:
"Writings of a philosophical and social nature whose content deals with the false scientific enlightenment of primitive Darwinism"
Ben Stein lies and distorts throughout his movie. People defending it are not doing themselves any favors. - Report as inappropriate

- Posted on Apr 19 2008 12:58 Awesome Awesome Movie. The evolutionists have no answers for him. I love the part where ben asks one of them so where did life come from and the guy answered, from a one cell organism on crystals and Ben said yes but where did that come from and the "all nowing scientist" said I just told you. What Ben was getting at was where did that original crystals and organism come from. This supposedly smart scientist could not even comprehend the question. These people are so blinded by what our universities pound down their throats they can not even comprehend a simple question let alone answer it. Go Ben way to show how smart these guys really are. Come on Dawkins you referenced the idea of aliens seeding the earth with life. And he thinks the Christians are crazy.....WOW
