Alexander the Last (2009)
Director: Joe Swanberg
Movie review
From Time Out Online
With indie demigod Noah Baumbach in the producer’s chair and a recognisable face among the cast (Adams from ‘Happiness’), is the crown prince of mumblecore going mainstream? Frankly, no: this is Swanberg on form, and perhaps even on autopilot, with another semi-improvised, sexually explicit tale of romance among the Big Apple’s hip, indie-haircut twentysomethings. This time our heroine is Alex (Weixler), a budding actress torn between her love for shambling troubadour husband Elliott (Rice) and her fascination with stoic Thurston Moore lookalike Jamie (Jacobs). The film displays Swanberg’s customary integrity, but it never really gets anywhere, and at times just resembles arty DIY porn.Author: Tom Huddleston
