Movie review

From Time Out Online

For his latest trick, Danish wunderkind Winding Refn (The ‘Pusher’ trilogy, ‘Bronson’) has pulled a grotty Viking saga out of the hat, and it’s really quite brilliant…for the first twenty minutes. Mads Mikkleson lives up to his name as a heavily-tattooed, one-eyed killing machine who, after dispatching sundry warriors while being chained to a post, escapes his captors and joins a band of men wanting to introduce Christianity to Jerusalem. Kudos to Refn for attempting to do something new – both visually and narratively – with the Viking genre, but a mixture of arty aspiration and confusing plot means that, sadly, this falls long short of satisfying.
