Naughty Marietta (1935)
Director: WS Van Dyke
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
The first MacDonald-Eddy vehicle, enormously popular in its day so somebody must have been able to stand this simpering duo. An adaptation of Victor Herbert's 1905 operetta (which perpetrated Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life), set in New Orleans, with MacDonald as the French princess running out on an arranged marriage, kidnapped by pirates, and falling for the stalwart backwoods scout who rescues her. Eddy, believe it or not, addresses her as 'Bright Eyes'. The fine supporting cast is a relief.Author: TM

- Posted on Jun 18 2010 15:28 Eddy addresses her as "Blue eyes" not "Bright eyes" and the film was enormously popular setting a new standard for musicals. It is not everyones' cup of tea but if you see it with an audience you'll be caught up in its charm.
