A terrorist hijacking a cable car, even in New York, is a mildly ludicrous idea - were no 747s handy? The plot of Nighthawks makes no sense. Its thrills are strictly visual: the thriller as TV commercial? Stallone (the cop) gives a restrained performance for once, and Rutger Hauer (the terrorist) shows why he was to make it big in Hollywood.Author: MB

- Posted on Nov 11 2007 19:23 It is over two and a half decades since Sly was the broken jawed darling of Hollywood. In between the various rounds and chapters of the Balboa saga he tried many times to break out as a serious actor, usually without success. Financially this movie couldnt have really hurt many folk. Scenes shot in London and Paris are neat and aided by Hauer's realistic portrait of a conniver and tyrant. But in the afterglow its often easy to discount movies such as this as mere vehicles for 'The Stallion'. What lets it down ultimately is weak plot and a lack of faith in the periphery characters. But certainly worth a look to see Stallone in 'I wasn't really that bad an actor once' mode.
