'92 The Legendary La Rose Noire (1992)
Director: Joe Chan
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
As its ineffably pretentious Anglo-French title suggests, this looks back to the '60s, when costumed crime-busters, mysterious private eyes and vicious master criminals crowded the screen in low-budget Cantonese movies. Joe Chan (with substantial uncredited assistance from Wong Kar-Wai's then partner Jeff Lau) lifts characters, dialogue and sometimes entire scenes from these movies in parody of material that was pretty far gone to begin with. Highbrow critics in Hong Kong and Taiwan were charmed out of their pants and raved about post-modernism. Westerners may be reminded of Losey's Modesty Blaise.Author: TR
