Emigrants (2002)
Director: Ivaylo Hristov, Lyudmil Todorov
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
This Bulgarian Golden Rose winner mixes comic social drama - every Bulgarian film is, it seems, a critique of the national housing situation - with a cautionary tale about inflated expectations of the new capitalist dawn. Three unemployed mates hang out at the ramshackle Argentine bar by the airport hoping to get away from their complex lives, homes and relationships (one resides with his sister, another is part of a bizarre ménage-à-trois, and the third makes a play for his girlfriend's mother), only to find, when they gatecrash a swank hotel conference, that in the new order the bills are still paid by a conspiracy of 'cops and thugs'. Whatever their efforts, they learn, their 'shit still smells Bulgarian'.Author: WH
