Une Epoque formidable… (1991)
Director: Gérard Jugnot
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Jugnot's dream of drowning anticipates his social downfall in this comedy of misfortune. In quick succession he loses his job, home, family, car and finally even his shoes. Shuffling around Paris with a couple of plastic bags tied to his feet, he falls in with Bohringer's little band of bums, who introduce him to a life of sleeping in métro stations, begging and petty thievery. Eventually his luck turns and he escapes from what is never presented as a particularly desperate existence: the rosé spirit of René Clair moves in the picture. Full marks to Jugnot for never trying to make his own character sympathetic. But his opposition of lovable outsiders vs. a flint-hearted society of traffic wardens and civil servants is facile.Author: BBa
