The Waikiki Brothers (2001)
Director: Im Soon-Rye
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
This has a great first line: 'Thanks for coming to see Waikiki Brothers. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances this will be our last song.' Seems that since the introduction of karaoke machines, the market for lounge covers of 'La Bamba' has dried up all over Korea. As the band disintegrates around him, the taciturn, half-defeated Sung-Woo retreats to his home town, scene of youthful flirtations, hopes and dreams. An old flame proffers renewed hope, possibly, if only he could stir himself to make a move. Poignant, understated and bittersweet, but the drama is never as moving as you think it's going to be.Author: TCh
