Welcome to Sarajevo (1997)
Director: Michael Winterbottom
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
The first Western feature to pick over the bones of the Bosnian conflict, this applies the trusty 'foreign correspondent finds his conscience' ploy to some effect. Dillane is Michael Henderson - based on ITN reporter Michael Nicholson - a hardened pro who none the less becomes obsessed with the plight of a Sarajevo orphanage during the 1992 siege, and promises refuge to one young girl. A crisp, rigorously unsentimental director, Winterbottom was a good choice for this project. Mixing film, video and a good deal of news footage, he captures a powerful sense of the jogging, jagged rhythms of life and death under siege, takes an unapologetically polemical line against Europe's hands-off policy, and consequently earns the emotional dividends.Author: TCh
