Where the Buffalo Roam (1980)
Director: Art Linson
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
The Drury Lane stage version of Hunter S Thompson's imaginary biog stank, but Linson's movie lists closer to the vicarious thrill of the loathsome baby's fictitious experiences. Bill Murray passes well as Thompson, although Peter Boyle's occasional appearances as his 600lb Samoan attorney can't help but upstage him. It's all here: the copious drink, the superhuman drug intake, and the wind-ups shot at whatever symbol of authority Thompson considers as fair game; but, as with his writing, the attacks always fall short of delivering the final payload. Laughs aplenty for people who use drugs as a pose, but most will be left wondering if half a pint of Bass doesn't qualify as a revolutionary action.Author: JG
