Dekalog 3: 'Honour the Sabbath Day' (1988)
Director: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Taxi-driver Janusz, his mother, wife and two kids leave a chair free, in the traditional manner, at their Christmas Eve dinner-table. At midnight mass, Janusz spots a familiar-looking woman looking at him, and later, back at his flat, receives a call from her and meets her in the street. Her husband is missing; he must help find him. He reluctantly agrees, and having lied to his wife about his taxi being stolen, embarks with the woman - with whom it becomes clear he has had an affair - on a search through the lonely city and its hospitals, dry-out clinics and railway terminuses. A film of enormous compassion, this long night's journey into day says more in under an hour about the suffering consequent on exclusion (the film is full of closing doors), infidelity and the absence of charity than a life-time of sermons.Author: WH
