Dekalog 7: 'Thou shalt not steal' (1988)
Director: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Kieslowski's camera roves past the windows of a Warsaw housing estate and looks in on a family of four. Majka (Barelkowska), a sad-faced woman in her early twenties, is having trouble comforting four-year-old Anka - screaming from nightmares about wolves - when she is roughly pushed aside by a 50-year-old woman. Majka herself takes comfort from her father, a gentle organ-pipe maker. What are the relationships between these four? And what is the cause of the awful tension in the air? Dekalog 7 is only nominally about stealing (Majka kidnaps Anka and takes the child to her teddy-bear-making ex-boyfriend's cabin in the Josefow woods). It is really a questioning - and insightful - examination of the difficulty of growing up (for all generations), and the true meaning and implications of fathering and mothering.Author: WH
