A set of additions and precisions to The Gleaners and I, offering further insights into the acquisition of life's daily necessities from everywhere but the shops. After the original film's release, Varda was inundated with letters from sympathisers (plus a plethora of heart-shaped potatoes, the film's emblem). With her DV camera and new backpack, she sets off to chat to some of these correspondents - for example, a globetrotting button scavenger - and to check up on her original interviewees: one dead gleaner and one in psychiatric care, but otherwise all seems well. Perky, humorous but given to snatches of melancholy, ever ready to be blown off course by a fortuitous wind, Varda is here on vintage form, persuading us anew that as society is presently ordered, you don't need a beach to be a beachcomber.Author: BBa
