The Diary of Anne Frank (1959)
Director: George Stevens
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
One of those extremely long and well-meaning adaptations of plays, this doesn't really amount to very much, despite its intrinsically moving subject matter. The story of a Jewish family, who had to hide in a concealed attic for two years before they were captured by the Nazis, is poignantly true, but remains a little too theatrical in this production. Millie Perkins looks good as Anne (though her personality seems wrong), while Shelley Winters' hysterical performance as Mrs Van Daan won her an Oscar as best supporting actress.Author: DP
