O Dreamland (1953)
Director: Lindsay Anderson
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Dreamland Amusement Park, Margate in Coronation year. Tacky mechanical dummies depict tortures and executions; people in daft hats mill around, lose on the slot machines, gawp at animals in tiny cages, scoff greasy food; in the background slushy ballads vie with bingo callers and the demented shrieks of a Laughing Sailor. Yes, these proles are certainly a grisly lot. Okay, eating mushy peas and listening to Frankie Laine may not be very edifying, but Anderson's snotty attitude towards it all, his withholding of any affection or empathy, is a sight less so. At one point, some women spot the camera and break into an impromptu can-can. Presumably, Anderson included the shot because he thought they looked silly.Author: BBa
