One of the more homely Disney animated features, neither hip like The Jungle Book nor (pardon the expression) trippy like Fantasia. We're back in that serene Disney woodland where bright flowers dot heavily shaded glades and snow plops off branches like ice-cream. Here female creatures bat long eyelashes and kindly old Widow Tweed lives in a cosy cabin. She domesticates Tod, an orphaned fox cub who plays happily with a puppy hound until they grow up (and Tod acquires Mickey Rooney's voice). 'Two friends who didn't know they were supposed to be enemies', runs the catch-line. But the moral aimed at the children is a very conservative one: duty to your kind must come before personal friendship, that's nature's way.Author: JS
