From Here to Eternity (1953)
Director: Fred Zinnemann
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Bowdlerised version of James Jones' novel about physical passion, jealousy and anti-semitism in a Honolulu barracks immediately prior to Pearl Harbor. Best known for Lancaster and Kerr's adulterous romp in the surf, but besides Burnett Guffey's crisp monochrome camerawork and Daniel Taradash's taut screenplay, it's the performances that stay in the memory, particularly those of Clift and Sinatra. Zinnemann's flat direction does produce its dull moments, though; one can only dream of what Minnelli, say, might have made of the steamy melodrama.Author: GA
