The Future of Emily (1984)
Director: Helma Sanders-Brahms
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Sanders-Brahms' films are not for the faint-hearted. Compared to No Mercy, No Future, her coruscating study of schizophrenia, this is almost a joyride, a long day's journey into O'Neill territory with three generations of mothers and daughters at each other's throats. Fossey, successful actress and single mother, returns home to Normandy to visit daughter and parents. Recriminations multiply, with Fossey and Knef (her mother) living through a dark night of the soul, each balancing the family/career equation and baring her passionate obsession with the other. Strong meat, but the actresses sink their teeth into it with consummate relish.Author: SJo
