Lightly likeable but awkward attempt by Hope to sustain a more dramatic role than usual in a romanticised biopic of Jimmy Walker, the not altogether honest mayor of New York during the roaring '20s. Good period atmosphere and a few charming guest appearances from Jimmy Durante, Jack Benny and others, but it's all very slight.Author: GA
