A true original, this one, from the demented minds of director Jonze (famous for his lo-fi pop promos for Fatboy Slim and Björk) and screenwriter Kaufman (not famous for anything yet). Taking a job as a filing clerk on the seventh-and-a-half floor (don't ask), Cusack happens across a portal into the head of John Malkovich, the actor. Chivvied along by maneater Keener, he starts selling tickets to interested parties, but not before his wife (an unrecognisably frumpy Diaz) has decided she likes being a man so much she needs a sex change operation. Yes, it loses its way a little in the sex war department, but this must be seen to be believed, a hundred carat cult item - and all credit to Malkovich for playing along.Author: TCh
